You seem to have corrupted an essential part of what I presume you
wanted:

        (.*\<)?

which means zero or one of (anything followed by an intra-word-type
character [including line ends]).

It is superior because there is no RFC requirement for a space between
a header line and the data that follows.

Without the ?, yours is no better than ".*\<" without parens, and
does not offer the advantage discussed.
