I'm thinking that as a matter of publication style, it might be good to
always use explicit variables for tabs and white space as in:
TAB="<tab>" # <tab> is the literal character
SPACE="<space>" # likewise for <space>
WS="[$SPACE$TAB]

The initial $-sign is back, but the recipe is clearer. (I wish procmail
accepted
the \n,\r,\t notations).
