Ah, so it is probably a serious error then.

Not really. Whatever is causing the problem is happening pretty early. Could
it be a permission error?

I do not think so because it happens intermittently. Like every so many days.
Looks like a good time to rationalise my procmail
configuration, which has grown haphazardly over the years and is
difficult to debug. (But always seems to DWIW - so far).
