oops, looks like the curly-brackets are required. I changed to:
"v=spf1 +exists:CL.%{i}.FR.%{s}.HE.%{h}.null.spf.altavista.com -all"
Nothing under "null.spf.altavista.com" exists but I will be tracking the
queries sent for it.
