MAIL FROM:<AT envelope-sender:envelope-return AT example>

Perhaps the ESMTP 'Mail-parameters' of RFC2821 are a better way to do this than "source routing", since source routing will still mean something to non-modern MTAs.

Do You think that there are significant number of non-modern MTAs are connected to the Internet with relaying enabled in the configurations?

To combine both ideas, in a way:

MAIL FROM:<envelope-return AT example> RESSEN envelope-sender

if the SMTP server offers the RESSEN extension.

It is an acceptable idea for me, but it is clear that all of the involved MTAs need to upgrade.

It is better/easier to change non-modern MTAs to modern MTAs. Or not?
