This is not accurate. S/MIME signed mail is perfectly readable by
users who use an MUA which is not aware of S/MIME. The S/MIME
signature simply appears as a harmless (but possibly confusing)
attachment and the message body is visually unaffected.
Only in the case of encrypted mail would the end-user be unable to read
the email, but since it's impossible to send an encrypted mail to a
person who has not set up their own S/MIME key so this is not a
practical concern.
