Re: I hate to interrupt all this for something practical, but.... we need a concise, easy-to-follow set of SPF instructions in file format - anyone able to help?

Since SPF works via DNS, we are going to have to look at DNS records.
You may be using a DNS provider that has an automatic web site for
managing these records. If so, you will still need to know some
details about how SPF works and setting up your policy. I will
identify the records you need to communicate with your DNS provider.

I believe that many web hosting providers use virtual servers and
instruct customer domains to define the www 'host' something like
this:-

www.example.com. IN CNAME virtual-host.provider.com.

In this situation it is not possible to create an SPF record

www.example.com. TXT 'v=sfp1.....'

as it is not permitted to have a CNAME and any other RR for the same
host. Neither would a wildcard SPF record be consulted for a mail-from
of 'www.example.com'.

So, it might be a good idea for the Howto to give instruction as to
how to handle this situation.
