That's the point exactly of my frustration. The plethora of
auth systems is not a problem since, as Stuart pointed out,
each system addresses a different element of the mail stream.
My concern is the workload to look up a (potentially endless)
variety of independent records without any a priori indication
that such records or mechanisms are applicable for a given
domain.
From our own experience with attempting to enforce RFC
compliance more strictly, there are huge problems (particularly
in the AP region) with (what Stuart termed) YACCMAs. If there
weren't such problems, rfc-ignorant wouldn't need to exist :-).
