Hi all,

a while ago, Jeff Carnahan from US Bank made contact with the council and
we privately exchanged some thoughts about SPF, other e-mail authentica-
tion solutions, and how financial institutions could benefit from any or
all of them.

Now he invited the SPF council to send a representative or two to the
upcoming BITS "E-Mail Security Meeting" (BITS, formerly an acronym for
"Banking Industry Technology Secretariat", being a consortium of 100 of the
largest financial institutions in the United States) in Washington, DC, US,
on Thursday, 2006-11-09.

As none of the council -- possibly with the sole exception of Stuart -- can
make it to that meeting, we agreed to forward the invitation to the broader
project community. See the invitation below and the meeting details[1,2,3].

If you feel sufficiently competent with regard to SPF and its relation to
similar technologies (i.e. Sender ID and perhaps DK/DKIM) and if you are
interested in representing the SPF project at the BITS meeting on Nov 9,
then please reply to this message before Friday, 2006-11-03. It would be
good if you also read the BITS paper on e-mail security[4], which describes
their viewpoint.

We will then contact you directly and set up your participation with Jeff
Carnahan and the BITS people.

The council would request that our representatives give a brief report to
spf-discuss after the meeting.

Julian,
for the council.

Subject: BITS Email Security Meeting Invitation - November 9
To: BITS Security and Risk Assessment Working Group and Select ISPs and
Mail Providers

The BITS Email Security Meeting will focus on email security and
authentication. This one-day, invitation-only meeting will bring together
experts from the financial services industry with experts from the
Internet Service Providers (ISPs), email service service providers, and
other staeholders to reduce phishing and malicious code (e.g., spyware)
through the adoption of common approaches to email security. This event
will be closed to members of the media in order to facilitate open
dialogue among invited participants. Attached is a list of hotels near
the BITS offices. There is no charge to attend this meeting, but space is
limited and you must RSVP to attend in person.

Members of the BITS Email Security team are currently drafting a paper
that promotes the adoption by financial institutions and their service
providers of three major protocols. The paper also establishes a timeline
for the adoption of these protocols. The ultimate goal is to improve the
reliability of and consumer confidence in the email delivery channel. I
will send meeting participants a draft of the email security paper and a
draft meeting agenda prior to the November 9th meeting.
