But since I can't use xsl:script in XMPSpy, how should I go
about this?
That's rather a non-sequitur isn't it? I suggested you use Saxon 7.2,
why should the fact that XML Spy doesn't support xsl:script affect your
ability to do this?

Subject: RE: [xsl] Using Regular Expressions with XSL
Is there a way to use regular expressions with XSLT?
Not in XSLT 1.0 (except via extension functions).
Regular expressions are supported in the draft XSLT 2.0 and
implemented in Saxon 7.2.
