It also happens to be a used as a replacement for "in reference to:" at the
head of letters of reply, which was shortened to "reference:" (Still used in
legal docs) and then shortened again in computing (WAY back whan I had just
got my first computer with front panel switches still) to "re:" due to the
saving on memory!!
Here endeth the lesson! (I would put it in latin for Charles, but I only
know Veni Vidi Vici, and that aint true :-)

And here I thought all you Brits were taught Latin from your earliest days
in school. I suppose that education standards have fallen all over.
"re" is the ablative singular form of res, rei; a fifth declension noun
meaning "thing" or "matter"
Singular Plural
Nominative res res
Genitive rei rerum
Dative rei rebus
Accusative rem res
Ablative re rebus

I've seen subject lines like
Re: AW: [xsl] Syntax Problem
What does the AW mean?
Antwort ("Answer" in German).
Now a more difficult question: what does "RE" mean?
