Thank you for that, I was not aware and it is VERY good to know. Is that
parser specific or is it just an XSLT thing in regards to attributes? I
assumed it read them directly in the order that they existed in the data
tree.

Subject: Re: [xsl] two namespaces and a position problem
Anyways I cannot use a variable (I thought) in the loop because you cannot
reassign the value of a variable.
Of course you can have xsl:variable inside a for-each (as I showed) it
isn't re-assigning the value of a variable just definining a new
variable with the same name.
But you really don't want to use position() with select="@*"
you have
<row column1="value" column3="value"></row>
so
<xsl:for-each select="@*">
will process two nodes
column1 and column3 but you could run the stylesheet once and
column1 will be position()=1 and
column3 will be position()=2
then you could run the same source and same stylesheet again with no
changes and
column1 will be position()=2 and
column3 will be position()=1
The order in which the attributes are reported by the XML parser is
__arbitrary__
and not guaranteed to be consistent from run to run.
