I've always been suspicious of people recommending
the Chicago manual of style.

Yes, true, but then you run into a fascist copy editor at some journal
publisher who insists you follow it.
I haven't even considered whether there are different algorithms for
different core styles (apa, mla, etc.), which there no doubt is!
