Would you happen to have a typical example of that? Until now we haven't had
problems with inter-word space being dropped, at least not that I know of.
It would be useful to know as some of our developers are about to jump to
use XML and XSLT in their web apps. TIA

Do you want a real-world example, or is the "extraspecial" toy example I just provided a clear enough illustration?

Note: this infelicity is not very common in absolute terms, but it is also unavoidable by any means other than getting the parser/processor to behave (you can't reliably put those spaces back). And if it's only as common as two elements appearing adjacently in mixed content with only whitespace between, still it's visible -- glaringly so, to the reading eye -- and as you may know, typographers and layout designers are touchy creatures. As are many readers altogether.

Cheers,
Wendell
