Using the id() function relies on the XML getting validated against a
DTD (that specifies that attribute as type ID) - are you sure your
imported files are being validated?
Actually it only requires that the DTD is read, which isn't guaranteed
by a non-validating XML parser, but in practice most XML parsers used
for XSLT aappear to be non-validating-but-dtd-reading-xml-parsers, so
id() does work.
