So Michael, what does the id() function do in the case stated by Elliotte?

It returns the node with that id (as determoned by Xpath) ie the first
node with that id attribute.


I mean, should the XML processor not just return the error stating the
input source is invalid XML,

Only if the input is parsed with a validating XML parser (which often is
not the case) The default parser in saxon for example isn't validating.
