That there's no current node while processing a scalar value, I  
understand, but why can't there be a current document?

Funnily enough we tried that design in an early draft. It led to lots of
extra complexity, so we dropped it. It's one of those things that gives
intuitive behavior 80% of the time, and then causes something bizarre to
happen when you were least expecting it.
