  But I think you can do a simpler test for your needs - how about this:

  <xsl:if test="count(row/x[. != 0]) &gt; 0)">

you never need to test count() &gt; 0 it is equivalent to

  <xsl:if test="row/x[. != 0]">

except that it is less efficient (unless your system optimiser rewrites
it) as the first form asks the system to find all the rows and count how
many there are whereas the second form can stop the search as soon as it
finds a suitable node.
