if its windows...I found using TextPad and PFE useful, Textpad has
useful plugin xml modules

I'd second PFE; I still use it regularly, even though there hasn't been a
new version for about 5 years. TextPad is very good, but I still haven't
made the switch from PFE :-)



if its mac osx AquaEmacs is a good option


On my Mac (my primary dev box) I use SubEthaEdit, which is free for
non-commercial use.
