word boundaries are very sensitive to language.

The thing is though it's defined in terms of a boundary between
characters of unicode character classes (some set of letter like
characters) and (some set of punctuation like characters). Whether or
not that corresponds to anything natural in your language of choice is a
separate and only partially related, issue.
