Selecting the first item from a tokenized string

Hi,

I am trying to select the first item from a tokenized
string. I was trying to use the item-at() function.But
this seems to have been removed from Saxon and
possibly also from XSLT 2 . Is there another function
I could use to do this? Would really appreciate any
help.
