<xsl:attribute name="src">
http:/

That will make the start of the src attribute be a newline, probably
encoded as
You want
 <xsl:attribute name="src">http

or more simply just

<img src="{http://images.amaz...

no need for xsl:element here.

I need to strip off the 'ISBN ' part

substring-after() is your friend:

<img
src="{http://images.amazon.com/images/P/{substring-after(isbn/isbnprim,'ISBN
')}.01.THUMBZZZ/>
