Yes I am invoking from ANT I version 1.6.5. I'm going to change back to an
earlier version of Saxon for the time beign. Also just in case it makes a
difference, it is the Saxon 8.9 from sourceforge.

In fact Saxon 8.9 comes with an Ant task supplied. I put it together rather
hastily and it does the minimum needed for building my own documentation
(that is, it passes some of the parameters needed for a schema-aware
transformation) but I hope to develop it further in due course.
I don't know why any existing techniques for invoking Saxon from Ant should
have broken.
