implementations of XQuery.

And some companies are prepared to pay to turn some of that 'amateur'
time into 'professional' time to get an open source implementation that
fits their needs. That was the case for XSLT 1.0 processors, is the
case for some of those XQuery processors, and is likely to be the case
for any libxslt 2.0 (and the more it is the case, the sooner it could be
done).
xsltproc has co-existed with multiple other XSLT 1.0 processors for
several years, and I don't see why it is infeasible that a xsltproc 2.0
could co-exist with other XSLT 2.0 processors.
