Yes, XSL-List does predate the split. Tony Graham, the list's founder,
posted the first message to XSL-List on Feb 16, 1998. XSLT was split

no-brainer that Mulberry would start an XSL list given the then success
of the DSSSList and since discussion of 'xml-style' was already taking
place on the DSSSList. Also IIRC, the timing was mostly to do with the
W3C XSL Working Group being established around that time.
The DSSSList list guidelines post from January 1998 [1] describes the
convention for a 'XS:' prefix for DSSSList posts about 'xml-style'. The
next DSSSList message is "XS: XSL Wish List" [2], where Tommie Usdin
responds to official encouragement to discuss XSL on the DSSSList by
giving her wishlist for XSL.
