Well said!  That puts it all in a nutshell.

And it explains why some seasoned programmers in my classes have more
troubles wrapping their heads around some aspects of XSLT than novices.
They are used to looking at problems in a more classical perspective that
does not serve them well in XSLT.


Not just XSLT. It  explains why seasoned programmers have trouble
adapting to non-procedural programming in general.

Seeing as that seems to be the way programming is headed there are
some interesting times ahead.
