Ouch! According to those slides, eXist doesn't do early exit for an expression
like preceding::word[1]. That's really painful. I do hope they have fixed that
in the meantime!

(Yes, the problem here is different than in the paper, and here keys
are likely to be the best solution. But nice to know you're not alone
