me if I'm wrong, but I believe the most common server implementation
of KPOP is qpopper, and it doesn't support Kerberos 5.  This might be
entirely unrelated to the stuff you're looking at, though.

Well, it is unrelated... but I did changed the code to never try KPOP if
kerberos IV is not being used, though.
