It occurs to me I should provide more info ...
I'm running on Debian GNU/Linux (Woody). I'm using Postfix as my MTA,
Procmail as my MDA, and Courier IMAP. Fetchmail is run by the fetchmail
script in init.d that runs it with options "--daemon 300 --syslog" and
fetchmail rc is pretty simple:
defaults proto imap fetchlimit 1000
poll <server> user "<e-mail>", pass "<password>", is <user> here
As you can see, I'm delivering to port 25 and not directly to an MDA (I
saw that as a possible explanation during a search for answers).

The only recent changes I can think of are that I switched IMAP servers
from UW IMAP to Courier about a week ago. At the time, I experimented
with maildrop but then switched back to Procmail. I suppose the maildrop
issue might be related, but my postfix master.cf and main.cf file have
references to maildrop removed -- and everything was working okay for a
week. At about the same time I also upgraded postfix. So it's possible
it's one of these other programs. However, it's been restarting or
changing fetchmail that has fixed my problems, so I'm inclined to start
with fetchmail.
