Fetchmail does not get my mail. I run fetchmail as follows:
fetchmail -d 180
with .fetchmailrc as follows:
poll mail.wdn.com with proto IMAP:
user 'username' with password 'my password'
I was using exim but decided that since I am a lone wolf user, I don't need any
of the features of a mail transport agent -- so, I killed exim a few days ago.
(Please note that fetchmail quit working for me at least six months ago, so
removing exim probably did not affect my mail delivery at all.) I have been
getting my mail with mozilla-mail, which quite happily forwards my mail to
/var/mail/Inbox, where Mutt looks for new mail and everything is cool.
I am using Linux2.2.20 Debian3.0, Fetchmail3.4; 5+ gig unused HD storage,
197Meg ram, and dial-up ISP (with very little knowledge of Linux).
Questions:
Where is there a step-by-step description of the process by which mail gets
transmitted to me by my ISP and, specifically, how the mail ultimately gets to
my /var/mail/Inbox where I can pick it up when and how I wish?
Should I expect that including "mda /var/mail/Inbox in the fetchmail command
will notify fetchmail etc to successfully forward my mail into /var/mail/Inbox?
I feel somewhat foolish that I can't figure our the answers, but I've tried.
