"Eric S. Raymond" <esr(_at_)thyrsus(_dot_)com> uttered:

If you removed the 'limit' option, how would one make sure that
messages > NNN bytes are not retrieved by fetchmail and instead be
deleted by the mini-client you suggested? How would this mini-client
integrate with fetchmail in daemon mode?

It wouldn't. If you're so worried about bandwidth charges that
you're refusing oversized messages, you're not running in daemon
mode anyway because

I apologize if I am missing the point of this thread, but it is possible
to use a seperate piece of software with Fetchmail that would let you
set a limit on the size of the mail you would retrieve, and delete any
that don't meet this criteria.

The one I use is Mailfilter (http://mailfilter.sourceforge.net/), which
I use in my .fetchmailrc like so:

poll popserver with proto POP3
user 'xxxxxxxx' there with password 'xxxxxxxx' is 'xxxxxxxx' here
options nokeep
preconnect "mailfilter"

mailfilter allows you to set many other options for deletion as well,
including subject, content-type, etc.

there is also a script here:

http://cfaj.freeshell.org/src/scripts/mfilter

which will even allow you to filter out attachments (like, say, .exe,
.scr, etc.)

BTW, I notice a few on this list use the "reply-to" feature on their
mail client, would it be possible to disable this? It doesn't seem to be
compatible with the overall useability of a mailing list in general,
IMVHO. I can copy and paste, yes, but should I forget or miss it...
