Certainly for the foreseeable future (maybe beyond), the header representation of envelope data has to stay us-ascii for reasons that Ran Atkinson outlined. Even RFC-ZZZZ explicitly allows negotiated 8-bit characters only in the data following the DATA command, not in the envelope addresses. How do the implementors in the west-European countries feel about this? Craig
