Would anyone care to comment on this report, in particular, the last
statement about hampering X.400?

< Network World reports that the Internet Activities Board (IAB) is
< developing a standard called the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions
< (MIME) that will enhance mail exchange functions on the Internet computer
< network, and is expected to further hamper the widespread acceptance of
< the X.400 standard.

Another way to look at this is that the Internet is moving closer to
*compatibility* with X.400. The introduction of MIME to the Internet
community will allow X.400 users to take advantage of the "extra" features
of X.400 that will soon be available in MIME also. This increases the
usability (and the widespread acceptance) of BOTH 822 and X.400, because it
increases the number of users you can exchange "enhanced" mail with,
regardless of which protocol you use.
