Cultural note:

In ISO 8859-1, 255 is Y with two dots on top.

In Cyrillic (KOI-8) as used on the relcom newsgroups it is something
called a "big hard sign"; in ISO 8859-5 (Cyrillic) it is CYRILLIC SMALL
LETTER DZHE according to RFC 1345.

I found this note in a keymap for Cyrillic Linux users:

BTW, big hard sign has a code \255 and causes
# a lot of trouble. It crashes a lot of editors.

I don't believe the mailers will be the *most* common source of problems
with 255.
