I think every encoding scheme has a pathological case which produces a "2X
their original size" situation.

nah.  some of them check for blowup on a chunk-by-chunk basis, and if that 
happens, they encode that chunk in another method that is more effecient.
all compression mechanisms do have cases where they "compress" to larger
than original size, but not all can produce output that is 2x the original 
size, or even close.
