A small correction here. It is not just accented characters. In Sweden
we have three additional characters "åäö". They may look like they are
just accented but the are really three distinct characters with their
own sounds and collating positions.

The frequency of the most common of these "ä" is about the same as for
"f" in English. So imagine that you couldn't use "f" in email-addresses
just because some other country had decided that they do not use it so
there can be no reason you need to use it either:-)
