i.e. it's not that people are making excessive use of boldface, font
changes, etc - it's that implementors are adding gratuitous markup
that typically wasn't specified by the author of the message and
adds absolutely nothing to the displayed output.
here, you offer a rather more constrained and pragmatic criticism than the
text in the subject line or your previous comment.
A call for more conservative use of 'automatic' html by implementors seems
downright reasonable.
fair enough. but surely you'll grant that
"automatic inclusion of text/html with gratuitous markup an abomination"
doesn't scan as well?
