So if you are advocating certificates or any form of system
where people
would say, "Get new sending software or risk your mail being bounced"
can you explain why you do so? Is it because you disagree with the
principles above? Or is it because you agree with them but
have decided
after careful examination that systems in line with the principles are
impossible? I would be interested to see proof of such an
assertion if
you have it.
Either or questions of this type are usually unhelpful.
We believe that ad-hoc filtering systems are already negatively
impacting the reliability of email. As does spam itself if left
unchecked, an email does no good if the reader overlooks it as
spam.
So you filter you loose messages, you don't filter you loose
messages. That is a major problem which can only be addressed
if there is a reliable method of bypassing the filter which in
turn is only acceptable if the method does not create a backdoor
for spam.
I agree with Brad that deployment is a major issue, one that
has to be at the center of any proposal. That is why I believe
that the participation of the major client and server software
vendors is going to be essential, as well as that of the major
ISPs. This is not the only forum that will be necessary to
advance a winning strategy. However it can provide considerable
assistance in helping direct that strategy, even if the gorillas
and elephants appear to be elsewhere.
As for the 'end to end' principle, on what basis is it asserted
that there are only two ends in this transaction? I see at least
four endpoints, the user relationship is quite separate from the
relationship between the enterprises that provide connectivity
which in turn is separate from the relationship between their
employers if it is an enterprise to enterprise transaction.
I don't think that the end-to-end model Clarke proposed is the
same as the end-to-end ideology that has been created out of it.
If we are going to rathole on this topic lets get Clarke in
on a con-call or some of us go round and discuss it with him.
I really don't beleive that Clarke holds the views being assigned
to him here, he always struck me as being eminently pragmatic.
