[Asrg] ASRG as a source of spam?

2003-05-18 06:58:25
Not sure how to put it most humorously... I had high hopes for the IETF
being able to address this issue constructively and effectively, but after
my second (and more sustained) attempt to follow these discussions, I
conclude y'all are generating a lot of smoke and confusion, running around
in circles and making no real progress towards putting out the fire of spam.
In parting, I hope to provide a bit of clarity:

0) Email is NOT free.
1) The technical tools to stop spam exist.
2) Users have insufficient motivation to use those tools.
3) The economic model of 'free' email is broken.
4) Stop dividing by zero and the problem is solved.

The unfortunate result of our collective inability to deal constructively
with the spam problem from a technical perspective will doubtless be
attempts at legislative cures that will most likely be worse than the
disease.

(I'd really like to contribute to a solution. I fondly remember my ancient
experiences as postmaster of one of the largest free email systems in Tokyo.
However, I simply don't have the time to deal with the messages here, most
of which are about as useful as spam. No insult intended, but that's the way
I currently see the ASRG. I wish y'all well, and hope you find some useful
answers.)
