Recognizing mail from known correspondents is a very thoroughly solved
problem.
I agree, yet my system is designed to recognize mail from unknown
sources.
It's the same problem -- the mail that's not from known correspondents is
from unknown sources.
I don't think that S/MIME is able to reproduce these functions.
S/MIME recognizes the known corrspondents. You've added on a C/R
layer for everyone else. See the ASRG archives for lengthy
discussions of all the reasons that C/R is a bad idea.
