[Asrg] How about we do something about spam?

2007-01-29 13:39:58

Here's an idea.

Let's list a few easy to agree with, egregious, spam (let's not
quibble the word I'm just talkin' here) methodologies such as zombie
bots in broad terms, outline the harm (undermines faith in the
internet as surely as counterfeit money does in currency, fraud, etc),
call on all govts of the world (kinda like that guy in "The Day The
Earth Stood Still") to not only legislate but to actually FUND
enforcement of that legislation with some of the usual dire warnings
everyone tosses in with such calls to action (if you don't act
decisively CHILDREN WILL DIE!)

Wrap that up in an RFC and publish it with a bunch of announcements to
the press and some fanfare.

I mean, c'mon, the internet is a globalized, probably trillion dollar
business and spam is a corruption in that business and needs, as one
aspect of its eradication, some doors kicked in and front page photos
of miscreants being dragged away in shackles and having their lives
wrecked for their efforts. Otherwise it's just a technological parlor
game.

I believe that govts, not all but ya gotta start somewhere, whose job
it is to enforce some reasonable civility and ground rules in the
business sphere, await some leadership and we could provide it.

If nothing else it's more productive than typing in war stories about
RBLs which is kinda like trying to focus a light beam by tossing
broken shards of a mirror in the air...likely to cause seven years bad
luck as well.
