Note, this makes an assumption about the nature of the business.
For example, is what you suggest practical for an email service provider?

participants on a separate sub-domain could solve the problem.

But could be an administrative pain.  Anytime a mailbox user needs to
subscribe, and post to list, they would have to submit a request with
IT to establish an identity in the sub-domain.  Then IT must depend
on the mailbox users to use the proper non-sub-domain identity when
sending non-list mail.  I think it is safe to predict that users
will mess up an use the wrong identity when sending mail to a list
and sending non-list mail.
