This is a good suggestion.
Personally, I much prefer something like CSV or SPF where there are no
consequences if concept is unknown to receiver.
I think your suggestion 5 will fulfill that requirement.

Well, there is no SRV record at the root but the root does exist, so NODATA
seems to be the right answer.
I was thinking of domains like _client._smtp.notarg3.dotat.at. I've just
re-tested it and it's now working as thought it should have done, so I
conclude that my earlier testing was flawed in some way. Fortunately the
code I was trying to test does the right thing :-)
