No, no it's not. RSADSI charges $20,000 to use their algorithms in any

RSA is only patented in the U.S. So there are good reasons to keep it
for us Europeans and others.
Well, considering that the US *is* the computer market anything other than
freeware is affected by the RSADSI patents. Add to this that the majority
of software is written in the US the faster we get away from RSA and other
encumbered algorithms the better.
The IETF is moving away from the use of encumbered algorithms and I see no
:-)
I don't like RSA due to the patent but I have a lot of precious key
signatures and it may take a while until they are all replaced by DSA or
another algo.
Well we all have sacrifices to make if we want to see this standard
survive against S/MIME which has some heavy backers. IMHO there will be no
major S/MIME implementations that do not support RSA due to the fact that
the major players have already paid their tithe to RSADSI and there is no
incentive for them to move away from it (and yes they have removed it as a
MUST from the spec but that is irrelevant if everyone is still using it).
This can be a major advantage to us as we can offer an alternative to
perspective software vendors that does not require absorbent up front
payments and royalties to boot.
