And the server is supposed to drop the message *after* it has committed to
handling it? This worries me...

Requiring the server to send individual replies separately still doesn't
improve its ability to detect errors. It can do the same thing whether or
not it has pipelined output after a transaction's final reply. (I admit
it's probably simpler to implement without pipelining.)
