IMHO, hiding is not the primary function of virtual memory addressing,

On the contrary.  Hiding the details from the programmer means that the OS can
move data around without bothering the application; that's *precisely* the
point of VM.  Without that, you can't have swap space.

Similarly, DNS hides the details of IP addresses, so that servers can be moved
around without bothering the users.

although it does spin off as a powerful means of security (Section 2.1.3
- security by invisibility).

Otherwise known as "security through obscurity".
