It has nothing to do with software and everything to do
with architecture. IM networks have less problems because
all the participants share a relationship with the IM
service providers.
hm. who is the service provider for jabber:harald(_at_)alvestrand(_dot_)no, and what
relationship does he have with the operators of jabber:hta(_at_)google(_dot_)com? Last
time I checked, I could still chat with myself... SOME IM networks enforce
such a relationship as the one you mention. not all.
