That's not how people tend to view Web video, there might be 50% of the
crowd watching it as Oprah speaks but the rest are likely to be time
shifted from a few secs to hours or even days.

You clearly don't understand the point of this event. There were 500k+
wanting to simultaneously watch it live. The other 250k+ that signed up
would be watching a time shifted replay. Due to the problems, significantly
more people ended up doing the time shifted version than had intended to.
