I did some more investigation, and...
1) RFC2616 also states: "...even though HTTP/1.1 clients will only
generate them in requests to proxies." -- which means, you can't use a
conforming HTTP/1.1 client to produce them.
2) I tested with Apache 2.2.8, which seems to ignore the scheme. That
seems to be a bug (raised:
<https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=45579>).
3) I also tested with MS IIS 5.1, which immediately produces a 501
status for unknown schemes.
