I've cut dense pieces of wood with a sawzall frankly have had much
better (cleaner) results with a chainsaw (love the sawzall for cutting
metal, though). A chainsaw will waste about 1/4" of wood, but
presumably you're cutting it off because you don't need it, anyway.
Any chainsaw dealer should carry a cheap guide to help you get square
cuts.
